Singh360 Founder to Share Efficient Methods For Controlling Excessive Humidity in Stores

MEDINA, Minn. (September 7, 2016) – Supermarkets often struggle to control excess humidity during summer and fall. These are the seasons when doors are most likely to fog up on refrigerated cases.
High humidity is a headache for grocery retailers for several reasons, according to Abtar Singh, founder and chief executive officer of Singh360.
That’s why he will present effective ways to control excess store humidity at the FMI Energy and Store Development Conference in New Orleans on September 13.
“Condensed moisture can make it hard for customers to see the contents inside a refrigerated case,” Singh said. “The fogged glass compromises the customer’s shopping experience. It may also reduce the retailer’s sales.”
If condensation drips to the the floor, Singh said, it can cause a serious safety hazard.
Then there’s the energy and maintenance cost.
“Excess humidity puts a higher load on refrigeration systems. It increases energy consumption and cost,” Singh said.
If humidity gets high enough to cause refrigeration coils to ice up, cooling systems shut down.
“Food may spoil or cause a health risk if the temperature inside a case falls below its safe range,” Singh added.
So what can maintenance teams do to balance and control these factors, without running up maintenance cost?
“You can’t just dehumidify the air. If the air gets too dry, you increase energy consumption for your HVAC systems.”
What, then, is the right humidity level? And what are the best ways to maintain it?
Those are key questions Singh will answer in his presentation, he said. The presentation will occur on Tuesday, September 13, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm.
Singh said he will explain the most efficient ways to identify the proper humidity level for a store.
He will also share a systematic process for diagnosing humidity-related problems. Finally, Singh said he will present ways to achieve the right humidity levels with minimal energy consumption.
“People who come to this session will leave with a clear understanding of the right set point for humidity controls,” Singh said. “I will also present the best designs and technologies for dehumidification.”
