Sprouts Farmers Market Uses Software and Services from Singh360 to Manage Energy Efficiency of Stores

Grocery Chain Reduces Energy Use by 15% in 9 Older Stores.

MEDINA, MINN. (September 18, 2017) – Sprouts Farmers Markets, a grocery chain of more than 275 stores known for healthful and organic foods, cut its energy use in nine older stores by 15 percent in four months.

With the help of software and services from Singh360, a Minnesota-based energy management company, Sprouts exceeded their project goal by 100 percent.

Sprouts is committed to promoting healthy living and environmental sustainability, with all new stores are built to LEED Silver specifications and older stores upgraded continuously. The stores average about 28,000 to 30,000 square feet each.

The grocer’s longer-term goal is to reduce energy use by 10 million kilowatt hours (kWh) annually across all stores. To help achieve that goal, the nine stores underwent a process of retro-commissioning under the direction of Singh360, which evaluated the stores for energy efficiency, including HVAC systems, refrigeration, lighting, ventilation and plugged loads.

Singh360 also deployed software from its sister company, kWh360, to identify and evaluate the opportunities to save energy.

Our first goal was to figure out why these stores were energy inefficient,” says Abtar Singh, founder and CEO of both Singh360 and kWh360. “Then we had to fix the causes of inefficiency. And finally, we are tracking the energy savings over time.”

The software calculated the savings by normalizing for changes in weather,” Singh says. “That’s how we know we are way above our target, with average reductions of 20 kW per store.”
